CLIMB TO MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Kilimanjaro is an ice-covered mountain massif, formed by three, now
inactive stratovolcanoes – Kibo (5,895 m), Mawenzi (5,149 m) and Shira (3,962 m). It is located in Tanzania and partly in Kenya. Uhuru, in Kibo’s crater, is the highest peak in Africa. The Maasai name of this mountain is Oldoinyo Oibor – White mountain, Swahili name is Kilima Njaro – Shining mountain. Since 1973, Mount Kilimanjaro has been part of the Kilimanjaro National Park, which was declared a UNESCO monument in 1987.

The Lemosho route on the west is considered the best choice. The success rate of reaching the top is up to 95%.
The number of tourists is significantly smaller here than, for example, on the Marangu route. It also offers enough time to acclimatise, increasing your chances of success.

The route starts at a lower altitude, you will progress through the rainforest and above it will connect with the Machame route.

DAILY PLAN

Upon your arrival at the airport, you will meet our driver. He will take you to your hotel for an overnight stay and dinner. We will plan everything according to the exact time of your arrival.

2. day

Londorossi Gate - Mti Mkubwa

• Change in altitude: 2377 m to 2896 m
• Distance: 6 km
• Ascent time: 3-4 hours
• Environment: Rain forest
Early in the morning, you will be driven from the hotel to the Londorossi Gate - the west side of Kilimanjaro. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours. You will need to fill out necessary documents before entering the park. Then you will continue by car for another hour to the beginning of the Lemosho trail. After lunch you will start climbing to the first camp, Mti Mkubwa camp. You will walk through the rainforest, so we recommend that you also take hiking trekking poles with you.

3. day

Mti Mkubwa - Shira Camp 1

• Change in altitude: 2896 m to 3505 m
• Distance: 8 km
• Ascent time: 5-6 hours
• Environment: Moorland (wasteland, boglands)
After breakfast, you will continue along the road leading up from the forest. You will see how the environment changes around you . Trees gradually disappear and instead of them appear small bushes, tall grass and volcanic rocks. You will cross several streams and reach the Shira Ridge via a minor climb. View of Kibo from this plateau is amazing. Then you will descend a little bit to the Shira 1 campsite.

4. day

Shira camp 1 - Shira camp 2

• Change in altitude: 3505 m to 3900 m
• Distance: 8 km
• Ascent time: 5-6 hours
• Environment: Moorland (wasteland, bog)

From here you will start descening to the Barranco campsite, which is located at an altitude of 3963 m. You will stay in the camp and enjoy plenty of food. Even if you end this day at almost the same altitude as you have started, the ascent to the Lava Tower and subsequent descent to the camp is very important for acclimatisation and will help to prepare your body for the final climb up the Uhuru Peak.

6. day

Barranco camp - Karanga camp - Barafu camp

• Change in altitude: 3963 m to 4570 m
• Distance: 9 km
• Ascent time: 8-10 hours

At this point you have completed the southern circuit that offers views of the peak from many different angles. Here you camp, rest and enjoy dinner and most of all prepare for the final ascent to the top. Two peaks Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this campsite.

Note: This day can be spread over two days. One night at Karangu Camp and the other at Barafu. In that case, you would arrive at Barafu camp early and have an afternoon to rest before climbing to the top. We will agree on a suitable option for you together.

7. day

Barafu camp - summit Uhuru Peak - Mweka Hut

• Change in altitude: 4570 m to 5896 m (and down to 3000 m)

This day is the most challenging day, but you have the greatest motivation to reach your goal. You are very close. You will start the day differently than before. You will get up at 11:00 p.m. and around midnight you will set off on your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. It is a difficult and long climb to Stella Point, which is on the rim of the crater. Here you'll rest, and if you're lucky, you'll be rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise ever. There is still about an hour's walk to the top. It is also necessary to count with snow showers. At the top, you will have plenty of time to celebrate your success and take photographs. Uhuru Peak is the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and of the African continent. From the summit, you will continue your descent straight down to Mweka Camp. You will stop on the way at Barafu camp for lunch. It is advisable to use trekking poles in this part of the trek. Later in the evening you will enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved rest and sleep.
